Where's Poppa?

One year before she went down in cult history as the “sexier” half of Harold and Maude, and two years after she’d won the Oscar for being the neighbor you love to hate in Rosemary’s Baby, 74-year-old Ruth Gordon starred as the feisty, senile mother of two inept adult sons in this darkest of comedies from twisty-brained director Carl Reiner. Fraught with taboos that can now only exist in films from the ’70s, Where’s Poppa? pokes a wicked finger at sibling rivalry, racial and ethnic stereotypes, old people—and, most of all, the adult children who hate them. So, momentarily take off your PC poncho and revisit the other side of the ’70s—no touchy-feely tree-hugging allowed.
