Waiting for Lefty

Clifford Odets’ compelling one-act play not only jump-started the writer’s career but also truly captured the voice of a blue-collar generation. In Waiting for Lefty, a group of hard-working taxi drivers, barley able to make rent on their current wages, decide whether or not to go on strike and consider the possible damage it could do to their families. Fighting political corruption, Big Business America and the fear of dangerous foreign ideologies, this play nails the struggles many face today—though Waiting for Lefty was written in 1935. Just goes to show some issues remain prevalent throughout the years—be happy another prohibition doesn’t look likely.
