In 1982, a man named Larry Walters got tired of life on earth. So he sat his ass in a lawn chair, tied 45 helium-filled weather balloons to its back and arms, and gradually wafted to an altitude of 15,000 feet over Long Beach armed with just a pellet gun, sandwiches, beer, a camera and a smile. This month, Chance Theater performs Bridget Carpenter’s Up, a quirky stage play inspired by this incident of awesomeness, and takes a look at what happens to Walters (known in this story as Walter Griffins) and his family once he touches back down to earth and must again face everyday reality.

Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 23. Continues through Oct. 23, 2011
