They All Come to Look for America

The America here is artist America Martin, whose exhibit at JoAnne Artman Gallery is definitely something to look for. The Colombian-American favors the human form as her subject, and she honors it with bright colors and commanding lines. “The artist cannot be idle,” Martin says. “It is only duty, love and discipline that make art. Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working. The artist is gluttonous, constantly devouring life in order to translate all that she sees, smells, lives or breathes into her own language. Why, and for what? For the blistering personal joy that comes when one is doing something of and about truth. There is no choosing this life. An artist paints because she must.”

Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; First Thursday of every month, 6-9 p.m. Starts: Feb. 3. Continues through March 31, 2011
