The Spirit of Django

Django Reinhardt, master gypsy jazzman of the 1930s and beyond was introduced to a new generation of hipsters thanks to the 1999 Woody Allen film Sweet and Lowdown. In it, Sean Penn plays a pathetic alcoholic guitarist obsessed with measuring up to Reinhardt. And who could blame him? Reinhardt's nimble, loping fretwork on gut strings was extra impressive due to the fact he only had the use of three fingers on one hand. Now hipsters, as well as genuine jazz aficionados, have a chance to watch guitarist Dorado Smith and an all-star ensemble perform a program of the late axman's great music at the Segerstom Center for the Arts.
