Considered one of the greatest films ever made, it seems inconceivable that this gruesomely gorgeous ghost story actually received mixed reviews when it was released in 1980. Bent on having a bona fide hit after his Barry Lyndon debacle, director Stanley Kubrick and script accomplice Diane Johnson dropped Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duval, Scatman Crothers and little Danny Lloyd into what has since become the terror tale of the century. Replete with wickedly decaying bathing beasties (knock at Room 237), slashed and trashed ghoulish girls (meet the Grady twins), elevators effusing tidal waves of blood (all floors), a harrowing, snowy hedge maze (bundle up), and one very large ax (all the better for chopping with, Mrs. Torrance), seeing this masterpiece on the big screen is the only way to go, so, treat yourself.
