The Prince of Atlantis
We certainly hope playwright Steven Drukman, sometime New York Times Arts and Leisure contributor and SCR Pacific Playwrights Festival regular doesn’t disappoint—meaning we hope he does. The premiere of this newest offering, The Prince of Atlantis, from the author of the Pulitzer-nominated Another Fine Mess, suggests wonderfully troubling themes: family duplicity, criminal behavior and a painful reunion of estranged parent and child (with laughs), all of it in the setting and idiom of the tight Italian-American “Down the Lake” neighborhood of Newton, Mass, near Beantown. So, no guarantees except to say that the promise of conflict surrounding meeting the sadistic responsibilities of being somebody’s father or son, the threat of violence, and revelatory humor seem enough to us to go on, or go to, a new work by this established playwright.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: March 30. Continues through April 29, 2012
