The Exonerated

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company’s drama The Exonerated begs the audience to imagine being in the worst of worst-case scenarios: punished for a crime you didn’t commit. A horrible, grisly, unspeakable crime. And the punishment is death. The true stories of six prisoners who persevered through the utmost social injustice, The Exonerated is a cold slap in the face of our perceived “innocent until proven guilty” system. These harrowing narratives, from a man convicted of killing his own parents to a married couple sentenced for the murder of two police officers, ultimately share a story of triumph as these innocent people were set free from death row. If only others could be so lucky when put in such an inconceivable situation.
