So, uh, no matter what your ex-girlfriend told you, size does matter. And the artists participating in the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art's annual member exhibition on 'matters of sizeable concern' know it. OCCCA affiliate artists present their take on the issue of size in 'BIG!' There are works with humorous approaches-think Pamela Grau Twena's giant glistening golden babies with creases and flaxen folds of fat, embodying gluttony, the self-centered, consumer values, disconnection and our perpetual, insatiable desire for more. But sometimes it's all grim, such as photographer Rik Lawrence's piece, 'Homeless N Helpless-NOT Hopeless!': a 5-by-7 black-and-white photograph of a homeless MacArthur Park man is meant to focus attention on the growing problem of homelessness in our own back yards. Sometimes, it's funny; sometimes, it's not. But the issue of size is much more than a superficial one. 'BIG!' approaches size with an honest demeanor-demonstrating the good, bad and ugly of bigness.
