Few characters from the big screen become so iconic that their popularity manages to span multiple generations. Tales of Robin Hood, an outlaw and leader of an army of Merry Men, began during the Medieval Period as part of European folklore, but has since become a popular subject in American cinema. Based upon ancient legends of the man known for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, the first screenplay was developed in 1938 and titled The Adventures of Robin Hood. As part of the Bowers Museum’s Great Screen Icon Series, the film is shown along with a discussion led by Michael Berlin, Ph.D., a film expert, screenwriter, producer and director.
