Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street

There’s something about a gory, blood-and-guts plot paired with a catchy tune that never seems to get old. Originally introduced in a penny dreadful serial called The String of Pearls (penny dreadfuls were 19th century British publications featuring gruesome story lines), Sweeney Todd, the bloodthirsty barber hell bent on revenge and meat pies, was an early example of urban legend—arguments abound whether or not the man actually existed. Fictional or not, through more than a century of storytelling—and a cemented-in-gold Tim Burton/Johnny Depp creation in 2007—Sweeney Todd continues to entertain with his darkly humorous tale of revenge, murder, cannibalism and song.
