Superman

In 1978, producer Alexander Salkind assembled one of the finest casts on record for the biggest-budget superhero movie ever, including screenwriters for the James Bond and Godfather films and cinematic superstars Marlon Brando and Susannah York. Superman: The Movie promised to make us believe that a man could really fly—and did it ever. Sans computer graphics and fake muscle suits, this love-story-laden thrill-fest shot to the top of the box office, in part, because newcomer Chris Reeve was the hunkiest slice of American pie, since, well, pie. It also didn’t hurt that Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane wasn’t some squeaky, girly-girl, but rather a smoky-voiced (via chain smoking) ballbuster who only melted when the straight-laced boy in blue swooped in to save her—and when he did, it was just like butta.
