South Pacific

What made the 60-year-old Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific a good choice for a Broadway revival in 2008? Well, an argument can be made for the surprisingly inoffensive portrayal of the interracial relationship between Liat and Cable. But more than likely, it’s the “these are all from the same production?” songs, rousing old-timey Broadway classics such as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Bali Ha’I” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” all subsequently co-opted by pop culture. The ’08 revival led to the current national tour and possibly a new film adaptation (the original premiered in 1958). Variety reported this past summer that Amber Entertainment was working on a “harder-edged” version—well, as hard-edged as a musical about singing, dancing GIs could realistically get.
