'Scrimshaw: The Art and Craft of the American Whaler'

“Scrimshaw: The Art and Craft of the American Whaler” celebrates this wholly unique American folk art, capturing the harsh, beautiful and sometimes cruel reality of life at sea. Nearly 100 objects are displayed in this exhibition, including tools made for mending clothes and ship sails, dice for gaming, household articles, toys made for loved ones, and such personal items as tools for shaving, smoking and writing. Also displayed are whole whale teeth carved with images of beautiful ladies in fashionable clothing, notorious female pirates, sailing ships and animated scenes of whalers at work.

Tuesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: May 21. Continues through Sept. 30, 2011
