Richard Newton Film Shorts

Clearly, the best thing to happen to the arts in forever is the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative that has energized the arts community to take a look backward at significant contributions of the 1960s-70s. One such experimental creator is ‘70 UC Irvine grad student Richard Newton, whose series of short films that focus on Irvine, Long Beach and other Southern California areas are reconsidered in a screening exhibition this week. Focusing on topics such as the Irvine Company’s development, the “cover-up” of Charles C. Hill and subsequent riot, and a performance piece shot on the streets of Beverly Hills, the films support the claim purported in the show’s press release that UC Irvine was once “a hotbed of creativity and experimentation.” We actually believe it—and we want it back!
