Jonathan Larson didn’t live to see his rock musical premiere Off-Broadway, or make it to Broadway, or to pick up the Tony or the Pulitzer Prize that it won him—which seems sadly fitting considering his passionate take on multiculturalism, homophobia and artistic integrity is filled with characters who have no idea if they’ll live to see another day, and so attempt to make the most of the here and now. As one of the longest running shows in Broadway history, Rent was Generation X’s Hair, a raw and raunchy look at the politics, sexuality and struggles of the youth of the day, and while much has changed in our technology-obsessed world since 1996, the humanity in Larson’s story remains universal and offers much more insight, emotional engagement, and epiphany than an evening of Snapchatting.
