Pound for Pound

Don't know about you, but we can hardly bring ourselves to visit the local animal shelter without wanting to take every creature-including the giant tortoises and hairy bunnies-home. Long Beach photographer/animal activist Susan Sabo hopes to drum up similar levels of sympathy from everyone else with her series of photographs of local shelter and rescue dogs, all in search of homes. Of the 8 to 12 million cats and dogs in shelters, 60 to 70 percent are eventually euthanized, and it's time to take some responsibility. With "This Is Who We Are: Photography of Susan Sabo," the heart-wrenching images of glassy-eyed canines peering from behind bars or pens might just help spread the word on the necessity of spaying and neutering our animals-and not dropping two grand on a purebred when there's plenty of perfectly adorable pooches waiting for a family and a chance at life at the local shelter.
Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays, 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Starts: May 4. Continues through May 31, 2008
