Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
Considered one of the treasures of cult moviedom, this Paul Reubens-Tim Burton-Danny Elfman schlock-and-awe campfest served as the launching pad for Burton into feature films, Elfman into movie soundtracks, and, with 22 Emmys already under his spandex belt, Pee-Wee Herman as the modern Charlie Chaplin—at least briefly. The man-child Pee-Wee was never for kids, though they never knew it, and in his cinematic Big Adventure, our nasally hero encounters ghosty lady truck drivers, badass bikers, and revives the tired classic “Tequila” in a platform shoe dance to end all platform shoe dances. The 1985 film grossed 40 million dollars on a 7 mil budget, which means whether you go in for the prissy, 98-pound-nerd or not, his hilarious caper is one for the ages. See it again on the big screen and bask in all its goofy glory.
