Pretty sure you recognize the type: someone so haughty, spoiled and bored within his lavish lifestyle that his only real amusement is to break hearts and ruin everyone elses lives simply to bring a jolly smile to his smug face. Now imagine that this same shithead was the star of a balleteven had Tchaikovsky sprinkle some tunes over his toe-twirling escapades of lust, passion, betrayal and I challenge you to a duel moments. Meet Eugene Onegin, the main character of Alexander Pushkins novel in verse of the same name. Its a tragic tale of brokenhearted girls, jealous best friends, white-glove slaps, gun battles and unrequited love like nobodys business. But whether its the 1800s or 2009, the idea of that arrogant, heartless asshole of a backstabbing friend is a timeless one, and the Eifman Ballet proves it with its take on this Russian classic.
