Musiq Soulchild strolls into Anaheim this week in support of his sixth album, Musiqinthemagiq (Atlantic), which features quips and stylings from the likes of Swizz Beats and the Kaliphat. The vocalist/songwriter seamlessly blends jazz, funk and hip-hop into a harmonious R&B melting pot—but he prefers to be known simply as a soul singer, thank you very much. And he’s got plenty of soul; Musiq Soulchild shines as a throwback to the genre’s golden age by channeling the passion of his musical idols Stevie, Ray and Sly. In fact, his moniker is an homage to the soul artists of the past.
