Murals Under the Stars

From listening to music in cemeteries to scraping beach sand from the various cracks on our bodies, summer in California was made for doing stuff outdoors. Those with more refined tastes should check out Museum of Latin American Art's annual open-air multimedia event, Murals Under the Stars, where the works of painter David Alfaro Siqueiros are projected onto an 1,800 square-foot wall. Enjoy a cool summer evening while pondering the vision of this controversial muralist whose fused his artistic life with his politics. Expelled from Mexico in 1932 for political militancy, he didn’t get much better treatment in Los Angeles—his 80-foot mural “Tropical America” was critical of US Imperialism and quickly covered up, remaining largely forgotten until 2012, when it was restored and re-displayed. Head to MOLAA tonight and spark your own artistic debate.
Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: July 27. Continues through Aug. 10, 2013
