Muck Roots: Ukulele Festival

Ah, the mighty ukulele—Hawaii's tiny four-stringed instrument spits out such dainty, whimsical notes. Great uke players like Ernest Kaai and today's Jake Shimabukuro wield that little thing as well as any guitar viruoso—and though the hipster ukulele fad may now be fading, only true uke lovers remain. Thanks in part to a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Muckenthaler hosts a Ukulele Festival this week. Fest performers include Captain Jeff and His Musical Chumbuckets, Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys, Left Over Cuties—and a new generation of players in La Habra High School’s own ukulele band.
