Morbid Angel

There was once a time when you could get away with ridiculing your girlfriend's creepy little brother for spending hours in a darkened room while listening to the guttural grunts, growls and base lyrical material of death-metal music. Decades later, with massive showcases selling out worldwide and an ever-fracturing music scene increasingly drawing on the genre's influences, it would seem the marginalized hessian hordes are having their day. Of course, this day wouldn't be possible were it not for the fearless pioneers of death metal such as Morbid Angel, who got their start in Florida in 1984. Though the scene has continued to produce guitarists, drummers and vocalists of increasing skill, Morbid Angel still know how to shred—particularly guitarist Trey Azagthoth, who has received recognition for his face-melting abilities from multiple magazines and critics throughout the years and has been rated as one of the scene's top guitarists.
