Long Beach Jazz Festival

When your best-known musical hook-ups have been with his purple majesty Prince and, uh, Ringo Starr, what are the chances of serious jazz fans taking you seriously? If your name's Sheila E., pretty damn good actually. Daughter of ace jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo and goddaughter of Latin-jazz legend Tito Puente, she'll be lending her dazzling percussion talents to the duo of Dave Koz (sax) and Jonathan Butler (vocals/guitar) during a stellar 3-day straight-ahead/smooth/soul/funk lineup of the Original Jazz Crusaders (featuring Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder), Boney James, Tom Scott, Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller, Christian Scott, conguero Poncho Sanchez and many more. Jazz outdoors? A definite A. Sheila E? A+.

Fri., Aug. 13, 5 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 14, 11 a.m.; Sun., Aug. 15, 11 a.m., 2010
