With each passing year, fewer and fewer people can remember a time when there were no Starbucks and the concept of “undeveloped land” wasn’t viewed as an architectural challenge. The county unfolded in uneven swatches of coastline and wildflowers with nary a grid to be seen, and painter William Wendt was there to document it. Wendt’s ocean-kissed landscapes will be on display until early February at the Laguna Art Museum—fresh on the heels of their fantastic Juxtapoz retrospective—tackling American Impressionism by focusing on the enigmatic Wendt’s hundred-year-old, gold-framed masterpieces. Sure, they’re beautiful . . . but who’s going to paint in all the toll roads?
