Jesus Hates Me

In the Chance Theater’s production Jesus Hates Me, life has not been kind to poor Ethan. Working at his family’s southern Texas backyard business, the “Lamb of God” mini-golf course, he simply wants to get through the week in one piece. In high school, he showed tremendous promise playing football—until he blew out his knee. Now he must deal with his over-zealous and angry mother, fed in part by her Christian fervor and in part by her bipolar disorder. Add to that a pot-smoking cop, some unrequited love, a suicidal brother, Ethan’s books by Nietzsche, and the answer’s clear: he needs to get the hell out. Then there’s Jesus—or rather, the stolen Walmart mannequin over Hole 17 whose sad eyes now gaze questioningly down at Ethan. What’s a boy to do?

Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through March 7, 2010
