Something unique comes across in the sound of folkie James Fletcher’s work: languid, piano-based, sweet ballads that have the presence of analog recordings as well as a subtle hiss. But rather than serving as a distraction, it’s a soul-adding enhancement—not that Fletcher’s songs need more heartfelt sentiment, drawing on influences ranging from Wilco, Kings of Convenience and Elliott Smith to, dare we say it, Bends-era Radiohead. He’s currently performing in support of his debut LP, Booze & Clocks, and will be engaging in the obligatory residency shuffle by playing at Detroit Bar every Monday night in February.
