Into The Shade: Drawings By Yu Ji

While many artists rely on color and paint to tell a story, artist Yu Ji could tell volumes with only graphite pencils and paper. His new exhibit “Into The Shade” at Saddleback College Art Gallery highlights the artist's illustration work which capture realistic scenes of the city with a ghostly touch: hustling and bustling streetwalkers move through the graffitied urban streets, and at times their individual movements are blurred together, which make you wonder, are these people real? Or are they phantoms moving through time? You'd almost be fooled into thinking they're photographs, if Ji didn't make his pencil lines so obvious. The end results are surreal, but it's worth heading down to gaze deeper into their brilliance in person.
