One of the more, um, “feel good” stories among the local theater scene comes back for another romp this month—The Camino Real Playhouse presents In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play), playing for a limited run on the company's second stage. It's the 1880's—and with the advent of electricity, the aptly named Dr. Givings has a new way to tend to his female patients suffering from hysteria—ladies who are prone to headaches, sensitive to light and sound, and other generalized symptoms that could be attributed to a hundred different ailments. And the way to cure it? A good ol' fashioned orgasm. With Dr. Givings' new-fangled electric wand, his practice becomes unsurprisingly successful—what is surprising is that folks were so uneducated about female sexual desire, this process was considered an up-and-up medical treatment. Talk about good vibes!
