Hippie-Trippy

“Anti Corporate, Anti Nuclear, Anti Coal.” This is the mantra New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light (BML) live by. And through this purist ideology, the duo of Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater make sweet, sweet music together. Pioneers of the freak-folk resurgence, BML orchestrated the Quiet Quiet Festival in Big Sur, which attracted such like-minded acts as Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart. BML’s music is slow and dreamy, an ambient trip into nature and sound; with song titles such as “We Share Our Blanket with the Owl” and “Black Feather Wishes Rise,” you know what you’re in for. Evoking the feeling of being floated over the desert on a blanket made by a Santa Fe shaman, BML will put you in a mellow mood. Trust us: We all need it.
