Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Is it better to burn out or to fade away? In the case of Canadian experimental rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, it’s apparently best to fade away for a few years, and then slowly fade back in. Going on hiatus in 2003 made what could be routine stops on their current tour (their first in nearly a decade) hotly anticipated, sold-out affairs. Even without any new records since 2002, it’s not surprising to see them back in the game, given that in the time they’ve been off, fellow bands from their hometown of Montreal—Arcade Fire, Chromeo, the Besnard Lakes—have done a fairly credible job of ruling the indie-rock scene.
