Fine Line

Some phrases automatically conjure images in a person’s visual index. Mention the words “A Chorus Line,” and you might catch yourself daydreaming about golden tuxedos and high kicks. But there’s a lot more to the story of the longest-running American-produced Broadway musical than you might think. The plot revolves around a casting call for a production that’s limited to 17 dancers. But before Zach, the charismatic and controlling director (played in this staging by Mario Lopez), announces the final cast, he adds a twist to the process. Alone, on a dark stage, he requires each dancer to spill their most private secrets about life, love and why they choose to dance. Director and original co-choreographer Bob Avian has spruced up this national thespian treasure, which has seen plenty of accolades, including nine Tony Awards and a Pulitzer for drama.
