Eels

For many people, the 1996 album Beautiful Freak was their introduction to Eels, the eccentric pop band led by singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett—otherwise known simply as E. Although ’90s melancholy hits “Novocaine for the Soul” and “Your Lucky Day in Hell” pushed the band into the mainstream, the career path Eels chose cemented them forever in the history of pop culture. Unbeknown to most, the band have supplied songs to more than a dozen popular movie soundtracks—including the first three Shrek films, Knocked Up, American Beauty and Hot Fuzz. E hasn’t stopped creating music since the band’s radio heyday, though the group have seen a revolving door of members. Eels are on an international tour this summer, showcasing their impressive back catalog, as well as both albums released last year.
