Most people wouldn’t confuse the Scottish city of Edinburgh with Laguna Beach, but this weekend, the cities’ theatrical sensibilities are very close. It’s the 2008 Gallimaufry Arts Festival, a project launched by the Laguna Beach-based Gallimaufry Performing Arts Company. The festival, which actually began last weekend, continues through Sunday with eight staged readings of plays by Orange County playwrights, as well as two performances of The Arab, the Jew and Chicken, a politically-themed collection of pieces from the London-based sketch comedy ensemble Conflict Relief, which Gallimaufry Artistic Director Steve Josephson discovered earlier this year at the 2008 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.
The new play festival, a joint production between Gallimaufry and the Orange County Playwrights Alliance, includes readings of eight plays spaced over two days, including OC-turned-NYC playwright Johnna Adams’ Rattlers, which receives its world premiere production Nov. 8 at Stages Theatre in Fullerton.
