Although not quite the smartly allegorical tale we encountered when Benjamin Hoff re-imagined AA Milne’s little yellow bear and friends in The Tao of Pooh, playwright Bert V. Royal’s parody of the Peanuts gang—who are now teenaged pot heads, goths, psychos and “fags”—uses the once-wholesome Shultz troupe to explore adolescent rage, violence and sexual angst and was an audience favorite at its debut in New York. Seeing how the tikes turned out is a hoot, of course, and we don’t think we’re nitpicking when we wonder why Charlie Brown went gay when it was always as obvious as a pair of Birkenstocks that Peppermint Patty was a lavender lass (Charlie was assuredly en route to serial killer via taxidermist). Still, Snoopy and Woodstock are indeed dead, and that means just about anything can go awry in this reality-bitten romp through the once-idyllic Land of 10,000 Lakes.
