Put together a married boyfriend, a suicidal young woman, and a priest attempting to honor his vow of celibacy, and you have the quirky 1971 romantic comedy, The Priest’s Wife. After finding out about her boyfriend’s double life, Valeria Billi (played by Sofia Loren) leaves just enough time to call a help line during a failing suicide attempt. Billi wakes in a hospital to find herself both alive and well, and meets the priest that took her call. Instantly, she’s intrigued and begins trying to date him. Of course, it’s more complicated than that, but eventually he falls for her charm, until their relationship hits one major roadblock—his holy vow of celibacy. The Priest’s Wife is shown as part of the Italian Cultural Arts Council’s monthly event, Cinema Italiano, to promote Italian art and culture in the community.
