Cats aren’t what we’d call devoted creatures. They’re solitary, come and go as they please and demand your attention often at the most inappropriate times—and rarely do they follow the directions of their master. Fitting then, that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, the second longest-running musical in Broadway history, follows a loose path and consists of random bursts of song and dance and plenty of spontaneous audience interaction. The show tells the tale of a feline tribe called the Jellicles on the night of the Jellicle Ball where they decide which among them will go to the Heaviside Layer (not to be confused with the layer of the Earth's ionosphere) and come back to a new life (because cats have nine). Bonus: the whole thing takes place in a junk yard and the dancers wear leotards!
