Blue Light

The legacy of mining in the Santa Ana Mountains is full of deep holes where today’s adolescents explore, hide, and perhaps find themselves: it’s an easy metaphor for coming of age in a grown-up world that tries to bury wildness and imagination. Sealed off by the U.S. Forest Service, the caverns and tunnels of Silverado Canyon’s famous Blue Light mine complex once lured young adventurers who found mystery, but lost their lives. This multi-media performance by choreographer Annie Loui and novelist Michelle Latiolais follows two fictionalized local high school water polo players into a world of water and wonder, light and darkness.
