Written in five days, Noel Coward’s supernatural comedy was an instant hit with British WWII audiences in 1941, both for its exceptional comedy and because its plot device of using a séance to contact the deceased appealed to many people who’d recently lost loved ones in the war. Focusing on the mayhem created after novelist/socialite Charles Condomine asks a medium to contact the other side where she unwittingly conjures up his annoying deceased wife—who is hell bent on upsetting his current marriage— Coward’s play set box office run records for a nonmusical back in the day and has continued to produce delighted audiences ever since.
