Self-proclaimed “face-melting rockers” Bethpage Black are one of those unsigned local acts who deserve some love. Named after the U.S. Open golf course, the Long Beach-based power-pop quintet shun what they call
“tragically in-touch-with-their-feelings neighborhood emo bands.” While some of their tunes skate perilously along the rock/emo line (such as “Sixteen Candles”), a healthy infusion of alt-rock (echoes of Dirty Pretty Things vibe through “Demyelination”) keeps them from falling into the icky abyss. Catch them at the Art Theatre and see if there’s a bite in the buzz.
