Barefoot in the Park

Keenly aware that everyone’s flat busted after the holidays, the Long Beach Playhouse astutely offers up a “pay-what-you-can” night this week for their run of Neil Simon’s award-winning tale of newlywed mayhem. Though the material is almost 50 years old, there’s still enough timeless situational comedy in this hit to keep modern audiences roaring over the misadventures of Paul and Corie Bratter and their tiny, sixth-floor New York walkup apartment. Choice lines are routinely delivered by Corie’s disapproving mother, Mrs. Banks, and kooky upstairs neighbor Mr. Velasco, who’s got his caps set on the stuffy gal—all to hilarious ends. It’s mainstream material, to be sure, but sometimes you need a break from raunchy profanity, gruesome torture and sloppy dismemberment—pre-school will be back in session before you know it.

Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 12. Continues through Feb. 11, 2012
