Alberta Cross

Forget everything you think you know about Alberta Cross. Yes, they’re signed to Dave Matthews’ ATO label. Yes, there’s more than a touch of classic rock revivalism coursing through their amplifiers. But while these facts may lead one to assume this is music geared towards the Birkenstock/cargo shorts set, such tongue clucking would only be partially justified. Alberta Cross brings an intensity that can only be construed as genuine and heartfelt—and therefore transcendent of the proverbial pigeonhole. Lead singer Petter Ericson Stakee’s soulful, almost-falsetto voice has been compared to Neil Young, as well as My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. But we’ll throw one more in the pot for good measure: Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell. The main distinction between Bridwell and Stakee, however, is that where the music and voice of the former tends toward the insipid and dull, the latter tends to soar.
