Adventures in Illegal Art: Creative Media Resistance and Negativland
Since 1980, the band Negativland has made records, video, radio, books, and live performances using appropriations taken mostly from corporately-owned mass cultureand theyve got the lawsuits to prove it. Rearranging content to recontextualize its meaning, the bands approach to culture jamming (a term they coined in 1984) has positioned them as key advocates for significant reform of US copyright laws. In conjunction with UCIs Video Dada exhibition which features 6 videos by Negativland, founding member Mark Hosler will personally present a video and story-telling performance about 30 years of the bands worksnone of which will ever be seen on TV due to legalities.
