A Place in the Sun

This 1951 melodrama, directed by George Stevens and based on the novel An American Tragedy, sets working class Monty Clift against a classist, elitist world that offers him so much wealth and station—and mostly, the hot, loving arms of Elizabeth Taylor—that he commits a dastardly deed to ensure he doesn’t lose it all. Clumsily bumping off annoying pregnant girlfriend Shelley Winters and getting away with it ain’t as easy as it seemed, however, and Clift eventually pays the price for his passion and ambition—although we’re actually supposed to feel sorry for him, because Winters really was pretty annoying. Winner of six Oscars (with nominations to Winters and Clift), this is one gorgeous catastrophe, filled with longing looks, desperate embraces and some of the most beautiful people on the planet.
