A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Although never personally awarded for his work on the music and lyrics of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Stephen Sondheim’s musical comedy won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1963. The story follows Pseudolus, a slave in ancient Rome who’s determined to get back his freedom by any means necessary—in this case, being clever and deceptive. Pseudolus offers to help his owner, Hero, win the affections of virginal Philia in return for freedom, and what follows is a hilarious tale of missteps and cover-ups. Catch this hit musical on the last night of its run at the Long Beach Playhouse or miss out on one of the most popular productions in Broadway history.

Fridays-Sundays. Starts: July 29. Continues through Sept. 3, 2011
