If you know nothing about A Chorus Line beyond its basic premise (Broadway hopefuls auditioning for a musical) and its most recognizable song (“One,” as in “one singular sensation”), you might assume it’s a Music Man-esque nostalgia piece. Though more than 35 years old at this point, it deals with some resonant themes―neglectful fathers, sexual identity, getting plastic surgery in an attempt to further your career—and liberally use the words “tits” and “ass.” The entire production is a bit postmodern, with no set other than a bare stage holding an audition, and no real plot beyond the performers sharing their stories and aspirations. Added bonus: The musical’s composer, Marvin Hamlisch, has achieved Tracy Jordan’s career goal of winning an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony).
