22 Degrees Below

Hovering around this line of latitude, photographer Hal Robert Myers captured images of cultures whose reputations are “typically shaped by either travel brochures or a patronizing view of its relatively poor economic conditions.” Through his camera lens, Myers found a deeply personal connection with the habitants of such Latino-Caribbean cultures as Mexico, Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica. Between the landscapes of brightly-painted, dilapidated buildings and the heartfelt, earnest portraiture of locals, he discovered that around 22 degrees latitude lies an unappreciated beauty that reminds us how we’re all remarkably alike in our basic needs, desires and fears.
