Best Gadfly Orange County 2013 - Duane Roberts

The city of Anaheim has become the flavor of the month in political OC, with leftist activists trying to make it into the latest Selma while their conservative opponents swallow what Disney makes them gobble with all the gusto of a Brazzers starlet. Only one person has been able to stay above the ruckus and call out both sides on their opportunism and wild spinning: Duane Roberts. The lifelong Anaheimer is one of the few people still standing after the 1999 effort by an Anaheim Union High School District trustee to sue Mexico for the cost of educating the children of illegal immigrants, so he knows the dirty laundry of the so-called elder statesmen of Anaheim. Unlike both sides, Roberts knows the streets, knows how to pull public records, and knows how to raise holy hell without becoming a hypocrite. That the city's voters have refused to elect Roberts in his two attempts at public office shows how fucked-up Anaheim truly is.

My Voice Nation Help

Duane contributes a lot of good, limited by his own decision to reject any political involvement he finds impure.  (He didn't just lose in 2012; he finished LAST -- though that is largely due to lack of money, not of merit.)  It's the person who wrote this, Gustavo, who contributes little by throwing out false equivalencies from the shelter of privilege.

My "side" -- the reform side that's actually fighting corporate giveaways with what power we have -- is not the equivalent of the bloodsuckers who want to siphon Anaheim's General Fund into private pockets for generations.  But for Gustavo to admit that, drop the stupid insults ("make it into Selma"??  How about just "keeping it from becoming Mobutu's Zaire"?) and actually WRITE SMART STORIES and TAKE A SIDE other than that of irony and snottiness, would leave him vulnerable to criticism rather than at a safe distance up above the fray.  Clearly, what he really dislikes is that we leftists call him on his sorry detached pox-on-both bullshit.

You want things to be better in your Anaheim, cabrón?  Then use the resources you stumbled into and LEAD.  The people who you crap all over with hipster remove sure aren't perfect, but we're getting our hands dirty, unlike you.  BE AN ADMIRABLE JOURNALIST, man.  Stop with the vague, comfortable, precious attacks.  (You don't want to get into an argument about hypocrisy, believe me.)

(Gustavo's response to this sort of thing will usually be to call me "Bloviator."  You can write him and say what you think that the above meets that definition.)

@gregdiamond Bloviator: As usual, spare us your bloviations—and I didn't write this. But glad to see your assumptions are as bloviated as your you-know-what!
