Best Collective Orange County 2013 - Med-Aid
This is probably the most problematic of all Best Of contests, thanks to the Obama administration's "Potpocalypse," both aided and abetted by your friendly local officials. In the past year, thanks to a combination of raids, citywide bans and threats to seize property by the feds, dozens of storefront dispensaries have closed throughout Orange County. Med-Aid, which had only opened in Anaheim late last year, is about as close as you can get to a for-sick-patients-only club. Despite the fact its membership is mostly older people with terminal illnesses or serious disabilities, Med-Aid was kicked out of that city—yes, the same one that annually hosts the Kush Expo at the Convention Center—and moved south to Huntington Beach. There, police ticketed the collective, parking a marked cruiser in front to detract would-be visitors. Med-Aid moved to an industrial neighborhood, but the DEA came calling and shut them down this summer. Although there are a handful of dispensaries still open in OC, the best bet for card-carrying cannabis smokers is to check out weedmaps.com and see if there's a place near you still open. Move fast; that list grows shorter every day.
