Readers' Choice: Stella's Hope

If you're looking to get a new pet, why not adopt a dog rescued from a high-kill shelter or abandoned by its owner? The German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (GSROC), a nonprofit organization serving our area as well as greater LA, is dedicated to "rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing purebred German shepherd dogs" in need. Along with adoptable dogs' sizes and approximate ages, the GSROC website includes multiple photos and gives you the truth about the animal's demeanor and needs. You can read up on a dog's known history, how it was rescued, if it can be around cats and children, if it requires special medical attention, etc.— all details absent from most rescue and shelter websites. The organization screens potential adoptive families, ensuring the dogs are going to good homes and that you are ending up with a dog that fits your lifestyle—a perfect match for both sides. All dogs from the GSROC are spayed or neutered, current on their vaccinations, and de-wormed. The minimum adoption donation is $350, plus $25 for microchip for dogs older than 1, or $450, plus $25 for microchip for dogs 1 year old and younger. The donation is tax-deductible and helps further the group's mission.

German shepherd puppy are hair color and texture, no missing teeth, erect ears, a black nose, and confidence. The standard colors of a German shepherd are tan and black. Other colors are red and black, all black, sable, blue, liver and white.

Truly, this turns my stomach. GSROC, Stella's Hope or any other rescue or shelter out there, "THIS IS A WIN FOR THEM ALL!"

Please stop arguing about who gets the credit of being the Best Rescue or Shelter in O.C., as the "Dog Doesn't Care who Rescued It, Just That it was Rescued." Adoption Wins Here, which Means that all Dogs and Cats Win, that are in need of homes.

Period! Adoption Wins, All Rescues and Shelters Win! Russo's Pet Experience wasn't listed. No Pet Shops were listed. Stop the Insanity and Work together, before all the rescues start to look like the Candidates last Night Running for President bashing one another in front of the World. Who Cares which Rescue Wins, It's the Dogs and Cats that Win, as People's Opinions toward the concept of Adopting and Not Shopping is spreading.

Hi Gracie , I think you are misunderstanding the arguing as it has nothing to do w who won .it seems people tend to create drama out of nothing . Stellas Hope has no beef w GSROC ..I personally volunteered for the group before I founded Stellas Hope ..This is about OC WEEKLY and the way they ran the contest ..they asked people to vote it was about the reader ...the readers voted and they voted stellas hope ..but then OC weekly discounted this by posting a one line comment without even a link to who Stellas Hope is ..its just a disapointment on there behalf it is obvious that they just tried to bring attention to the magazine ..This has NOTHING to do w rescues arguing ..like many have said the good news is ..a rescue was chosen as the best way to get a pet which is all that matters in the end

I am not familiar with Stella's Hope, but I am sure that collecting so many votes means that something is so special about this rescue, and I am glad to find this information for the future and simply happy that there are many great rescue groups out there.

I have adopted my 6 years old puppy from GSROC. And I am simply happy for them.

I tired other rescue, not mentioning the name, but they were not responsible at all, stories, histories, and characteristic of dogs they introduced me were so and all wrong, they totally seemed like they just were in a rush and wanted to dump one of their dogs on me. My neighbor also experienced the same. Probably not all volunteers are like that, but it was someone who was in charge of operation, and this one experience was enough to make me feel like not supporting the particular group... sorry to say.

However, GSROC was completely different, they do not just try to give away dogs to anyone. They have counselor, match maker, they even come over to our house to make sure the new environment is good for the dog. And they brought a whole set of educational materials to us upon the home visit approval. They really think about the best of the dog. I was completely AMAZED!

I'm sorry but personally any mention of Stellas Hope on anything period leaves a bad taste. I personally have experienced this rescue along with a hand full of others & while I have seen many great rescues, this one is not it. This rescues founder has done quite a bit of shady things to some of her fosters & claims to take in all dogs but won't take in small ones unless it benefits her. She has quite a few dogs that are older & casts them to the side & does not network them. Why do you ask? Because the puppies make her money, so she focuses on them. She also claims to be a great rescue but she is more of a hoarder. Stellas Hope is also not a non-profit & has been a for-profit rescue for the past 2 years. How do you think the rescue founder affords her newer luxury car?She gives out fosters information, tells fosters to get food etc. and then never bothers to reimburse the costs, then tries to justify her actions by stating she never agreed to anything at all. She has a tendancy to tell people she loves them, and their great. She then no longer needs them or disagrees with them & tells everyone she knows how horrible they were. In reality it is her attitude & her lack of ability to be a great rescuer that causes the rifts betweem her & fosters. She does not call people back when applications come in for dogs that she does not like, rather than being honest with them she lets them call over and over wondering why they are unable to adopt. This lady who runs Stellas Hope is not good & she in my mind as well in the mind of quite a few others does not deserve to have a rescue, should be shut down as a rescue, & never allowed to rescue again.

Stop to think before you back a rescue, especially this ONE!You only see the side she wants you to see, look at the bigger picture and realize more people have left that rescue on bad terms because of the rescues founder, contrary to what she states of all the people leaving. These are her lies & she will always stick to them

Thank You for defending me , Lori and Monica ..as for whoever you are and your need to hide behind anyonomous ..you are a coward . Anyone who knows me knows first hand I gave up a million dollar a year business to follow my passion and start my rescue .As for my 08 Escalade which was purchased in 2008 before I started doing rescue and is almost paid off ..this is none of your business believe it or not people do work and as for me I worked for the last 25 years ..the last 10 prior to rescue owned and operated my very successful business ...and FYI This was my 3rd Escalade and has NOTHING to do w my rescue . I am in the middle of SHORT SELLING ,my 800k home and have moved to a very humble rental property in Garden Grove because of my choice to give up all material things and my income to follow my passion ..HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE me of anything of the kind ....

As far as fosters and being reimbursed ..I can only think of ONE person who has had an issue w this and me in the past 2 years and that would be TRACY and TONY Nevarez which i am almost certain that is who the coward above is ....and NO if a foster goes out and spends a bunch of money on there foster dog without getting the purchase approved for reimbursment they will NOT be paid back and this is how every rescue group runs ...

again HOW DARE YOU >.say these nasty things that have NO factual eveidence to back them

I know for certain I am one of the only rescue groups who sends a good portion of our dogs to training that costs us over $1000 ...so that they can have a chance at a good home ..this includes the dog MIKA you fostered Tracy ..yes we still have her and she got to go to training ..like to date 15 of our other dogs ..hmmmm this sure sounds like someone who is all about the money doesnt it ???I will go without and do daily so that my dogs get what they need ...

its time you let your issue w me go ..truly its time ...YOU will not convince the people who support me im sorry as they know me ..and FYI almost 60% of our volunteers and fosters have been w Stellas Hope since its inceptoion .....yet another LIE you are spreading ...

With regards to "Ontheneedtoknow's" comment...Let me start with this...anyone that posts and hides behind an anonymous name should never be taken seriously...Those are some pretty harsh comments and it sounds as though you have a personal vendetta againest Stella's Hope and the founder. You are entitled to your opinion however to attempt to speak for others as you have done and again hide behind an unrecognizable name gives you absolutely no credibility. If you are going to slander someone and attack their personal life and be ridiculous enough to even attack someone's personal car and make damaging accusations than you are not just someone with an opinion, you are in fact someone who for whatever hidden agenda is out to ruin someone's life and I as a supporter of Stella's Hope and its founder cannot let your comment be accepted without including my opinion of Stella's Hope and its founder...

For those of you interested I will say this. I first heard of Stella's Hope when my husband and I were looking for a new addition to our family. The process, the people and our new puppy we selected could not have been more perfect and handled any more professionally. I personally dealt with the founder and a volunteer who came to our house for the home check as well as other volunteers at the adoption event...Everyone was AWESOME....so much so that I choose Stella's Hope to be a volunteer myself. It is one of the BEST decisions I have ever made because I not only feel as though my husband and I are apart of something that is making a difference...but I have also met some of the most incredible people....INCLUDING THE FOUNDER OF STELLA'S HOPE...who today, I would consider to be one of my friends...This rescue is exactly that...it rescues many that others would just walk right by...it saves many of the ones that without Stella's Hope would be lucky to make it past a week. There is nothing more clear to me than the passion Stella's Hope AND the founder has to save as many of the dogs that have been tossed to the side. It is a job that many of us could not handle and I admire all that this rescue and the founder has done and continues to do. This like "Ontheneedtoknows" comment is just my opinion....but it is my opinion that I stand by and I have no problem showing my name....Lori McConathy

OC Weekly, where did you get this grossly incorrect information? Have you looked at other rescue's websites? ALL rescue groups do amazing work and nothing different than that of GSROC.

Nothing is equal. Saying all Rescues do the same thing is grossly incorrect. Like all things in life, some are better than others and all are different.

greed Tom ,saying all rescues are the same and have the same ethics is incorrect BUT OC weekly making that statement as Mustlovedogs stated is grossly incorrect as well Stellas Hope does FULL temperment testing on all the dogs we take in .We will not place a dog up for adoption until we have had them a minimum of 2 weeks while we do this .we also have full vet exams on every dog and any dog over the age of 5 we do blood work on ..We also give any and all info on the dogs history that we are aware of ..I also know of many other groups in and around the OC area that have the same guidlines ..

Thanks for recognizing that a RESCUE is the best place to get a pet! I have adopted 3 shepherds from GSROC and they pour their heart and soul into each placement. Their volunteers are friendly and professional & spend the time to find the right dog for each family. They are all about quality of adoptions over quantity of adoptions. Three cheers to GSROC!!!

I have adopted several dogs from German Shepherd Rescue and the group does a wonderful job of getting the dogs ready for adoption and matching them up with the right family. You are not adopting a dog, you are adopting a family member. Kudos to them for getting recognized as the great group they are.

No disrespect to Stella's Hope but German Shepherd Rescue Of Orange County is an amazing group of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the Rescue. Congratulations to them.

I think this may not have been a contest, but rather the "best way for OC Weekly to collect as many email addresses as possible". I wonder how many other "best of" categories had winners that weren't on the ballot. I'm very dissappointed in you OC Weekly, shame shame shame on you.

WAIT ...WAIT...WAIT!!!!!.....How does this work....? How does a rescue win a contest that was supposed to be based on votes cast by your readers when they weren't even listed as one of the final top 5 on the ballot? German Shepard Rescue of Orange County, although a great rescue wasn't even listed on the final ballot yet they won????....In my opinion this contest, if ever to be run again should be titled "Best Way To Waste The Time Of Our Readers"...It makes no sense and I am disgusted with the time that I personally took and equally disgusted with the time others took to cast their vote in this pathetic contest, when in fact this wasn't based on your readers votes at all but clearly under some other guise. To me this is a clear indication of how YOUR READERS VOTES DO NOT MATTER.....There were hundreds, if not thousands of votes that were placed for Stella's Hope from their dedicated followers who took the time to voice their opinion in a contest that they clearly wanted their favorite rescue Stella's Hope to be recognized as the winner of the Best Way To Get A Pet contest....Although you may not be showing the correct winner...We all know who actually won this contest...!!! Thank you Stella's Hope for all you do because at the end of the day it's not a contest that tells you your the best...It's your dedicated followers and fans and more importantly the animals that you rescue that know your the BEST WAY TO GET A PET!!!!

This is not fair to Stella's Hope. All shelters deserve the limelight, but a WINNER is a WINNER, fair and square. How did this all of a sudden become your "winner"?

I absolutely Love German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County! BUT.......I am very confused as to why they won Best Way to adopt a pet when they weren't on the ballot??? Stella's Hope won Reader's Choice yet they are not given the reward of the announcement except for a small line off to the side under GSROC. I don't understand how the voting was supposed to work? What was I voting for???

im confused as to how GSROC won the "Best of " when they were not even on the BALLOT ..was there another ballot somewhere esle ??

hundreds if not thousands of votes went to Stella's Hope and the only mention is a small line in the box to the right? What's the point of people voting and having a reader's choice if it doesn't even get recognized properly?
